OPEN Letter to Citizens of Nevada

Nevada is not alone with its fiscal problems, job losses, cut backs and reduced tax revenue. But unlike other states, Nevada is in a unique and enviable place if we the citizens of this State will just open our eyes and minds to one of our greatest assets. This asset can be the solution to many of our fiscal problems.

The solution immediately saves 690 jobs. lt initiates the possibility of 3,000 to 5,000 new construction jobs for several years, as well as hundreds of very high paying jobs. Estimated revenues to the state will be in the billions; saving educators’ jobs, city jobs, and jobs across all industries.

We at Nevadans 4 Carbon Free Energy (NV4CFE) have been working on a plan to utilize Yucca Mountain and to convert it into a true resource for the citizens of this state. Our plan is to have Nevada become a leader in the world in the area of storing and reprocessing nuclear assets. This would ultimately create a world class Nuclear Energy Park. Nuclear assets are the spent fuel rods stored in multiple cities in 34 states. These assets (fuel rods) are like money in the bank– not only can we be compensated for storage now, in the future they can be reprocessed so they can be sold back to these utilities that sent them to us. Although current reprocessing technology is not commercially viable today, we strongly believe that this country, who put a man on the moon in less than ten years, can perfect the technology to safely and profitably reprocess in the near future. Nuclear technology has already improved safety to the point where exposure to the sunshine during one round of golf is more radioactive than the containers holding spent fuel rods.

What do we, the citizens of this State need to do? Demand that the Governor negotiate with the Department of Energy. Demand that he negotiate on behalf of the citizens of Nevada to set up an ‘Alaskan Permanent Trust Fund’ which would pay us annual cash dividends. Demand that he negotiate to start the process now. That he negotiate to stop the Federal Government from interfering in the destruction of this billion dollar asset by curtailing funds supporting Yucca Mountain, which further eliminates jobs and revenues to this State and its people. The law is clear that we have the right to negotiate a fair and lasting contract. This opportunity can provide a steady revenue stream for our state and our people. We are adamant that at least percentage of the annual income from the Yucca Energy Park go directly to the people, not the government, for the people to decide how best to spend their money. We must act now before politicians dismantle 25 years and l0 billion dollars worth of work that has been done to bring this great resource to a reality.
