The crisis in Japan will likely make the US look at its policy for storing spent fuel.
It’s time Nevada negotiated a better deal for Yucca Mt. to include an interim storage facility, research center, and to be studied as a possible site to recycle nuclear spent fuel.
Nevada has played a key role in nuclear research for decades at the Nevada Test Site. Now we should expand that research to address our nation’s nuclear “waste” management.
Burying spent fuel for 10,000 years is an outdated idea. Nevada can benefit from the emerging technology that can safely reuse nuclear spent fuel.
Yucca Mt. is an ideal location to temporarily store spent fuel while research is done on how to recycle it. When that technology is ready, we’ll have the fuel here to either sell to re-processors, or build a facility here to reprocess it.
We have a great opportunity to create an economic boom for Nevada, and help our nation address a critical energy need.
Recycling nuclear waste could produce around 5 trillion kilowatt hours of emissions-free energy over 40 years and, at the same time, greatly reduce both the volume and long-term radioactivity of our waste.
Yucca Mt. can provide a solution to a national problem and also secure good jobs and funding for Nevada.
